I've been reading so much of this Occupy "______" movement. Although it makes me glad that people are finally waking up, I'm kind of upset that it took this long. You can only wonder what the future of our country will bring if the same people that apathetically stand by while they're being screwed over, are the ones that will have to, eventually, step up and HAVE to make decisions. I feel that the indifference has only been temporarily shed. As soon as we get small results from these protests and riots, and as soon as everything falls slightly back into place, we will go back to our televisions, back to our magazines, to our websites. To quote one of my friend's friend on Facebook, "I don't care what happens until it happens to me". I couldn't be more indignant, although it IS true. I have done it, you have done it. Why should I care what policy passes if it doesn't affect me? But the thing is that it WILL affect you, eventually. Every single policy, rule, statute, can and will affect you in some way. Perhaps it won't affect you right away or at the precise location and time where you are, but eventually you'll fall into the demographic range of that new Medicare law, or that new bail out ruling. The point is, everything that the government passes, affects us.
For the record, I hope this spirit of political involvement remains.
To quote Thomas Jefferson, "If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be."
